Why one should not live in area without temples? Koyil iladha ooril en kodiiruka kuduthadhu?

As all might have noted the temples in India or most of the places have towers, especially those temples in south Indian states like tamilnadu etc have them almost in every temple, the major reason for not to live in place without temple lies on that tower only. So what is there in that temple tower. I heard this from my village old folks as well from my sister(she did some research studies on it).

Temple Tower(called Goopuram in tamil) (Wiki link for Gopuram)
You can note, normally temple towers are having finial kind of thing(kalasam) on its top, List of tallest Gopurams  and inside the tower(gopuram) they put ingredients like pearls, cereals etc..(varagu thaniyam in tamil).

KAMARAJAR CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS EDUCATION

KAMARAJAR CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS EDUCATION
Kumarasami Kamaraj Born July 15th 1903 in Virudhunagar was a well-known Indian political leader, freedom fighter and former chief minister of Tamil Nadu. The nation widely acknowledged him as the “KINGMAKER” in Indian politics (during the 1960s). He was referred as “Kamarajar”, “Perunthalaivar”,”Padikkatha methai” in tamilnadu. (Kamaraj, admired for his simplicity and integrity, had a long and illustrious political career as Member of Legislative Assembly from 1954 to 1967 and as Member of Parliament initially from 1952 to 1954 and then from 1969 to 1975. He also served as President of Tamil Nadu Congress from 1940 to 1954 and as President of All India Congress from 1963 to 1971.) Considering his contribution towards education his birth anniversary is been celebrated as “Educational Development day”. On occasion of this day I would like to emphasis few of his contribution towards education.
When Kamarajar came to power, he quickly realizes that Students were lacking with educational institutions. Illiteracy rate is much higher than the voters turn around. Illiterate parents were reluctant to send their children to school as they never felt the importance of education as he does. (Kamaraj was not a good student in school and dropped out when he was in the sixth grade. When he entered mainstream public life he felt handicapped and realized the importance of a good education. He educated himself during his periods of imprisonment and even learned English from his co-worker). All this made Kamarajar to take reform steps and made universal educational initiations. During his tenure as chief minister of Tamilnadu(then called Madras) (from April 13 1954 to 1963) introduced various reforms & revolutionized the education system. Here I am going to talk about 3 most important reforms of them.
1.       Putting end to retrograde policies: During the tenure of Rajaji, nearly 6000 schools were closed citing financial constraints also introduced hereditary-based vocational education scheme which required students to learn the traditional caste occupation of their families. This scheme was strongly opposed from all political quarters and which made Rajaji resign as Chief Minister of Tamilnadu. Following which, Kamaraj was chosen to be the Chief Minister by the Congress Party. He took the responsibility and went about rectifying the education system. Putting an end to retrograde policies such as the hereditary-based vocational education scheme, Kamaraj also reopened 6,000 schools that were previously closed and opened 12,000 more new schools. Those efforts were taken to start schools in almost every village with a population of over 300. (Realizing the importance of the mother tongue, Kamaraj took steps to introduce Tamil as medium of instruction in schools and government arts colleges, publish textbooks on scientific and technical subjects in Tamil, encourage use of Tamil in courts of law and use Tamil typewriters in government offices.)
2.      Free Education and uniforms: Kamaraj took charge to eradicate/remove illiteracy in state by introducing free and compulsory education up to eleventh standard. The Government provided exemption of school fees to poor children and also introduced and provided uniforms to weed out caste, creed and class distinction among the young minds.
3.       Midday Meal Scheme: The most revolutionary change initiated by Kamaraj was the introduction of the Midday Meal scheme, through which primary school children were provided with one meal in panchayat and government-run schools. (It is said this scheme was inspired by an incident which took place when Kamaraj was at a train intersection near the town of Cheranmahadevi in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. Kamaraj, while waiting for the train to cross, noticed young boys tending to their goats and cattle. He asked one small boy, “What are you doing with the cows? Why didn’t you go to school?”. The boy immediately answered, “If I go to school, will you give me food to eat? I can learn only if I eat.” The boy’s casual yet insightful response triggered the entire process into establishing the Midday Meal Scheme.) The scheme was officially launched in 1956 with the twin objectives of increasing enrolment of students from all mass and reducing drop-out of students from schools. (It is believed to be the first such Government initiative anywhere in the world to provide lunch at schools. Such heartening results inspired Dr Manmohan Singh, as the Union Minister of Finance in 1995, to suggest that the scheme be implemented all over India under the ‘National Programme for Nutrition Support to Primary Education ‘In Tamil Nadu, the scheme has undergone several changes such as the inclusion of eggs and vitamin tablets to improve the nutritional value of the meals.) (Though it is difficult to measure the success of the Midday Meal Scheme in isolation, its contribution to reduction of drop-out rates, increasing enrolment and improving nutritional status of children is beyond doubt.)
Conclusion: Virtue of all his efforts and policy, during the tenure of Kamaraj, the percentage of school going children in the age group of 6 to 11 years increased from 45% to 75%. Boosted up the literacy rate from 7% to over 38% in Tamil Nadu region. It was considered as the first steps taken towards the universalization of primary education by any government in India. The Midday Meal Scheme has been enhanced by successive governments and has now been adopted across the country. Contribution of Kamarajar to educational field made the villages to have at least the primary education (P.E).
He breathed his laws on October 2, 1975. In1976, posthumously he was honored with "Bharat Ratna" by the government of India.
The golden words of Kamarajar to the young students are, ' Face the problem don't evade it, find the solution for the problem'.

Words

Uncommon Word/Term List:

Aubergines: கத்திரிக்காய், Solanum melongena(also used in tamil movie Vamsam, said by sunaina),  egg-shaped typically dark purple fruit US, Canadian, and Australian name eggplant. Wiki: The nightshade Solanum melongena, also known as the aubergine, brinjal eggplant, eggplant, melongene, brinjal or guinea squash, is a member of the plant family Solanaceae.

Dum Pukht: Cooking, Dum’ means to ‘breathe in’ and ‘Pukht’ to 'cook'. Dum Pukht cooking uses a round, heavy – bottomed pot, a handi, in which food is tightly sealed and cooked over a slow fire. There are two main aspects to this style of cooking; bhunao and Dum, or ‘roasting’ and ‘maturing’ of a prepared dish. In this style of cuisine, Herbs and spices play an extremely critical role. The process of slow roasting gently persuades each to release maximum flavor. And the sealing of the lid; the sealing of the lid of the handi with dough achieves maturing. Cooking slowly in its juices, the food retains all its natural aromas and becomes imbued with the richness of flavors that distinguishes the cuisines. (Source ITChotels webiste)

Missing the woods for the trees: A common pharse to say when one is not looking onto what actually he/she is for. Simply you been to forest but looking just only a tree, other way to say is "You're missing the forest for the trees".

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me: The one i like most when people fools around you. Be a smart and clever among your surrondings and don't fall prey to this phrase anymore.

On the Budget day 28 Feb 2013: Facts

Times of India:

Trivia: Since independence in August 1947, the country has seen a total of 25 ministers hold the finance portfolio. It has also seen 81 budgets -- 65 normal annual budgets, 12 interim budgets and four special-occasion budgetary measures, also called mini-budgets.
Budget trivia: Among the 25 finance ministers since independence, the tenures of two leaders holding the finance portfolio -- Inder Kumar Gujral and Hemvati Nandan Bahugana -- did not afford them the pleasure of presenting a national budget.
Apart from Chidambaram, only former Prime Minister Morarji Desai had presented Budget eight times.
Budget trivia: The first Indian budget was presented by James Wilson on Feb 18, 1869. His designation was Finance Member of the Indian Council that advised the viceroy.

List of Places to be seen

Indonesia Part:
1. Pacu Jawi Bull Race.
Brief Given in Websites:
A) 2013 is at Pacu Jawi in Sumatra. Pacu Jawi literally means cow racing. Pacu is Race and Jawi is Cow in the local minangkabau lingo. Its not really a race but a run of two bulls each pulling a light sled on which the jocky places each leg. The jocky holds on to the bull's tails with each hand, and to make the bulls go faster in the muddy paddy field, he simply bites on the tail.
B) Usually after harvesting season, Farmers who have extra bulls or Breeders would show case their bulls for sale. The bulls are grouped into various pens, one as a holding pen for bulls waiting for the race, one for cleaning up the bulls after the race and one for display of the bulls and prospective buyers would gather and negotiate the price of the bulls. The sellers would pay professional jockeys to ride their bulls on a flood rice field. The buyers would gather to judge for themselves the bulls that they would want to buy. The jockeys do not wear any safety gears and they step dangerously onto a yolk harness made of bamboo and wood. To increase the speed of the particular slow bull, the jockeys would bite on its tail to speed it up. Photographers will usually gather at the finishing line or on any bunds surrounding the racing field. The path of the racing bulls is unpredictable…and hence the adrenalin rushes to get out of its way.

2. Sulfur mining at Ijen

Brief Wikipedia: An active vent at the edge of the lake is a source of elemental sulfur, and supports a mining operation. Escaping volcanic gasses are channeled through a network of ceramic pipes, resulting in condensation of molten sulfur. The sulfur, which is deep red in color when molten, pours slowly from the ends of these pipes and pools on the ground, turning bright yellow as it cools. The miners break the cooled material into large pieces and carry it away in baskets. Miners must carry loads, which range from 75 kilograms (170 lb) to 90 kilograms (200 lb), up 300 meters (980 ft) to the crater rim, with a gradient of 45 to 60 degrees and then 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) down the mountain for weighing. Most miners make this journey twice a day. A nearby sugar refinery pays the miners by the weight of sulfur transported; as of September 2010, the typical daily earnings were equivalent to approximately $13 US. The miners often use insufficient protection while working around the volcano and complain of numerous respiratory afflictions. There are 200 miners, who extract 14 tons per day or only 20 percent of the continuous daily deposit.

Sulphur miners at the Ijen Volcano in East Java, Indonesia
Miner Carrying sulphur bucket
Brief by Sasha Friedlander: Kawah Ijen is an active 8530 feet tall volcano in East Java, Indonesia. Inside the crater of the volcano lies the largest lake of sulfuric acid in the world (650 ft deep). Exquisitely beautiful visually, it is the site of a gruelingly labor-intensive sulfur mining operation. Here 200 miners collect and carry huge loads of pure sulfur as they trek up along a rocky 4 km path out of the crater, amidst clouds of noxious sulfur dioxide gas. They then climb down to the village at the base of the volcano unload, only to repeat the round trip journey again before the day ends. The miners will then sell the sulfur to the government for a small fee, equivalent to about five dollars a day. The government exports the sulfur, which is then used for bleaching sugar, producing fertilizers, black gunpowder, matches, insecticides, and fungicides and for vulcanizing rubber.

The miner’s physical pain can be excruciating, accidents are common, and exposure to the sulfur dioxide gases leads to chronic lung diseases. Because they are making more money than they would be making if they were to stay in their villages and farm, they continue mining in hopes of building financial security for their families, and ensuring that their sons will not become miners at Kawah Ijen. Sadly, the average sulfur miner at Kawah Ijen only lives till the age of 40, usually forcing their sons into their jobs, and thus creating a cyclical pattern that passes from one generation to the next.

(A sinkhole study trip: Also covering Belize)

Introduction: Wiki
A sinkhole, also known as a sink, snake hole, swallow hole, swallet, doline, or cenote, is a natural depression or hole in the Earth's surface caused by karst processes — for example, the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks or suffosion processes in sandstone. Sinkholes may vary in size from 1 to 600 metres (3.3 to 2,000 ft) both in diameter and depth, and vary in form from soil-lined bowls to bedrock-edged chasms. Sinkholes may be formed gradually or suddenly, and are found worldwide. The different terms for sinkholes are often used interchangeably. Lots of Websites are available to study about Sinkholes.
